Chief Chad Boissoneau's Message

As elected Chief of the Mattagami First Nation I would like to thank you for taking the initiative to become engaged in a new era of economic cooperation. Our Council is aggressively pursuing opportunities that create economy and opportunity not just for our members but for the region in its entirety. Mattagami First Nation territory is located within the Sudbury District near the town of Gogama. It is comprised of citizens of Ojibwe, Oji-Cree and Odawa descent, and is a member of the Wabun Tribal Council, a political organization that is also part of the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation Working together is the key! Together we can build on each other’s strengths and drive economic activity and investment capitalizing on the opportunity at hand. Community Mandate

Community Mandate Our focus and commitment to community is paramount. The success of Mattagami is a reflection of the collective desire of the elected councilors and Chief to listen to the ideas, creativity and visions of the people we represent. The social and economic wellbeing of our people and community is our priority! To achieve our mandate, we must embrace our cultural teachings and shared values as a basis for community action, community service and intergenerational leadership based on genuine caring, sharing, honesty and determination. As stated in our community asset section of our profile we embrace an alternative approach to deficit based development and yet, through meeting the needs of our community we identify opportunities that contribute to the achievement of our mandate.

Economic Priorities

Economic Priorities: 100% employment, a job for everyone that wants one! Long-term sustainable employment opportunities resulting from our economic efforts and priorities will contribute to the wellbeing of our people and our community! A sustainable forestry is a priority of the Nation. The forest industry is a major employer and offers a multitude of spinoffs that create opportunity. The mining industry and specifically our relationship with major developers, provides an opportunity for training and skills development as we prepare for opportunities as projects are being developed. Immersed amongst the lakes, rivers and streams, our community’s tourism industry is thriving! The continued development of the water front, our fishing derby’s and real-estate has and will continue to attract people and investors from around the world! Beyond the natural resources that are available to us, the community is building its way into the next decade! Indigenous communities across the country have lagged behind the rest of Canada with respect to Infrastructure but it’s time to catch up! We have not turned away from advancements in technology and have demonstrated an ability to reach beyond our community boarders to benefit from the digital economy for the benefit of our citizens. Mattagami is open and ready for business, our strategic geographic and governance structure is conducive to industry partnerships, joint ventures, strategic engagement agreements that corporate Canada will find attractive.
