Shamattawa First Nation, located in northeastern Manitoba along the banks of the Gods River, is a proud Cree community with a population of approximately 1,200 members. As one of Manitoba’s most remote northern communities, Shamattawa represents both the challenges and the opportunities of northern development. Its location within the Hudson Bay Lowlands offers significant potential in transportation, infrastructure, renewable energy, and local service industries—sectors that are essential to strengthening economic sustainability across the North. The community continues to take steps toward building capacity through investments in housing, education, and workforce development. Shamattawa’s leadership is working to establish partnerships that improve local infrastructure, enhance community services, and create employment for its members. Opportunities in winter road logistics, clean energy, and cultural tourism are emerging as areas of interest that align with both the Nation’s traditions and its vision for long-term economic growth. Despite its remoteness, Shamattawa’s determination and commitment to self-reliance reflect a powerful foundation for future collaboration and investment. Shamattawa First Nation believes that reconciliation is achieved when meaningful partnerships lead to tangible outcomes—jobs, training, and shared prosperity. By engaging with government, industry, and corporate partners, the Nation continues to demonstrate that northern Indigenous communities are key contributors to Manitoba’s future economy and Canada’s broader path toward inclusive growth.
